September 19th was International Talk Like a Pirate Day and nary a soul at Costume Craze wore an eye patch, a gold tooth or a parrot on their shoulder! But enough about our shameful negligence in missing out on all the fun, here are some interesting facts about this fanciful day of buccaneering amusement: International Talk Like a Pirate Day started in the 1990s as a joke between two American friends, John Ol Chumbucket Baur and Mark Capn’ Slappy Summers, and gained popularity after columnist Dave Barry heard of their make-believe festival. International Talk Like a Pirate Day (TLAPD), now attracts swashbuckling fans from all over the world. An American soldier stationed in Iraq celebrated with his friends by wearing eye patches all day. Sydney, Australia staged a harbor cruise with flagons of grog at pub prices and prizes to treasure for the dandiest of outfits. A bar in Venice, Italy held an olive stone-spitting contest for aspiring pirates. Clearly, Ol Chumbucket and Capn Slappy recognize the value of costumes in bringing a little diversion and enjoyment to everyday life. If you don’t want to wait until the next International Talk like A Pirate Day for a little swashbuckling adventure (and there’s no reason you should...Halloweens just around the corner!), check out Arrrr great selection of pirate costumes! If you’ve already started hunting down Halloween costumes for the kids, keep in mind that Halloween can be spookier than need be if you don’t take safety into consideration! First, watch out for open flames. There will be pumpkins or luminaries with lit candles on porches and walkways. Flowing costumes can very easily brush up against flames. Next, your child should have freedom of movement and vision. Children will be climbing stairs, crossing roads and traversing unfamiliar yards. Costumes that pose a danger for tripping should be modified to allow for unrestricted movement and/or vision. Finally, make sure you’re child is highly visible. Purchase costumes that are brightly colored when possible. For dark colored costumes, use glow bands or reflective tape. If your child insists on being a witch, for example, you can cut stars of reflective material and attach to the black cloak. These safety tips apply to all you big kids out there too! Here’s to a very safe and spooky Halloween! Free Is Good For Me! Everyone loves a little somethin, somethin for nothin, nothin, right? Well, climb aboard the Costume Craze freebie train! (just Google it ) Dont Freak Out -- Scary Story # 2 In 2007, a young woman, age 21, was traveling with her parents in Scotland. On her last night in an Edinburgh hotel, she encountered a real ghost. After staying up late to say her goodbyes to friends shed met, she retired to bed around 4:00 am. She headed up the stairs to her room on the third floor. It was summer and the hotel did not have air conditioning so it was quite warm. Halfway up the stairs, it turned suddenly bone-chilling cold -- she could see her breath. Stopping, the young lady felt someone physically pass through her, but there was no one else around. She smelled perfume, a mix of musk and flowers. A deep wave of sorrow and loneliness came over her. The young lady ran up the stairs and woke up her mother who went, with her daughter, to inspect the stair landing. But by then the temperature was back to being steamy warm, and the smell of perfume was gone. When she and her parents checked out the following morning, the young lady asked if the hotel was haunted. The manager said that it was -- that the Gray Lady still walks the halls waiting for her lost love (who was, supposedly, Bonnie Prince Charlie). When the young tourist inquired how you would know if you met up with her, the hotel manager replied most accounts are of cold spots and smelling her perfume.
